Thursday Linky Bits

What you should read/watch since I’m not writing:

Things Younger Than John McCain. You’ll be surprised.

This fascinating NPR story on different ways of dealing with transgender kids. Also look at the Q&A with two of the psychologists mentioned. I find the traditional approach (trying to make kids more ‘comfortable’ in their current gender by forbidding them to express other behaviors) kind of appalling, frankly – both politically and psychologically. I hope the trend moves in a more accepting direction.

The Test for Husbands and Wives is both hilarious and depressing. I have to say, Mr. Squab would score MUCH higher on this than I would. Which is, I guess, a sign of progress?

I love Ricky Gervais, Gordon Ramsay, and juvenile humor, so this is pretty much the perfect clip:

Happy Thursday!

Facebook IRL

Um, yeah. This is pretty hilarious.

POKE!

Rise, Hillary, Rise

For anyone who’s never understood why a progressive might choose Hillary over Obama, why some of us have found her campaign so important and uplifting, why we are so angry at her treatment in the press, watch this. It explains.

This here is some freaky cool shit. It’s kind of long, but personally I found it well worth the viewing.

Here’s the artist’s bio. More background here and here.

So. Awesome.

OK, this has already been posted everywhere, but on the off-chance that you haven’t seen it yet, SEE IT NOW:

(If you haven’t seen the Obama video of which this is a spoof, you can watch that here.)

One for the grandparents

Apparently I did something wrong in a previous life, because we are still cold-ridden (though sleeping better, thank goddess), I think I’m coming down with something, and I have developed a gross, ugly sty in my right eye. WTF, karma?

So in lieu of a more substantive post, here’s a clip of the Hatchling showing off some of her new vocabulary. I should note that this was filmed completely “blind,” as the Hatchling will only let you tape her if she can watch the video monitor the whole time. So that’s why there are some focus problems. But it’s still pretty cute.

That’s about the size of it

Also, this is pretty damn funny.

What cooler way can there be of teaching kids the alphabet than making up extremely catchy songs about the different letters? These are two of the best, IMO.

Today’s edition: Man, were they ever doing some high-quality acid when they made these clips. One of the things that was so awesome about being a kid of the 70s was that there was still a fair amount of flower power at work among the creators of kids’ shows. A good trip on quality hallucinogenics can make for some prime children’s fare. Consider these clips my argument for mass legalization.

Updated to add: – how could I forget THIS one? Ducks with ears, roaring dandelions, daisies with feet – pure hallucination.

Daddy Dear

The Yo-Yo Master and the Lost Kid

Trippy, no? But you REMEMBER it, right? Yet another clip that freaks me out more now than it did when I was a kid. OK, here’s number two … return with me to the hidden mists of your childhood:

The Great Space Coaster

All the benefits of LSD without the inconvenient flashbacks. YOU’RE WELCOME.

Friday Video Blogging

How did it get to be Friday already? We just got back from a trip up north to visit Mr. Squab’s mother. Just a quick overnight visit – which was about all we could have managed, given that the Hatchling, she no sleepy so good. Which mean nobody sleepy so good. The culprit? Two-year molars. Because, you know, those are the only teeth she hasn’t already got. But I digest. You need your videos!! This week, we’re going moogalicious.

Striped Balls Meet Polka-Dotted Ball
Awesome moog soundtrack. Plus: how rad is it that you can totally teach a lesson about embracing difference with just BALLS?

Orange Sings Carmen
Moog + Bizet / Citrus = groovetastic. It took the Hatchling a little while to get into this one, but now she’s fascinated. As will you be.
